IMPLANTS: THE FUTURE FOR TOOTH REPLACEMENT Throughout mankind’s history, tooth loss has been a severe compromise to quality of life. Even as recently as twenty years ago, most lost teeth were replaced with things that needed to be removed from the mouth after meals and at bedtime. George Washington had such teeth problems as to require false teeth carved from whatever old bones were available (not wood as often heard). In the modern era more permanent replacements, called ‘bridges’, were great improvements, as long as there were sufficient teeth to serve as anchors. In the early 1980’s a promising new treatment based on titanium implants was introduced to our country. Now, stronger teeth could be placed back into the same jaws from which the originals had been lost. Originally created to aid those who had lost all of their teeth, this technology has been modified successfully to replace almost any missing tooth. The new implant technology keeps the jawbones strong and healthy, as well as improving the natural esthetics of the smile. The process has been guided by the ability of computer power to turn radiographic scans into 3D holographic images of entire jaws. Vital structures can be located, bone density can be determined and esthetic possibilities can be explored, all on a computer. New research involving specially treated titanium has improved the ability of bone and tissue cells to integrate the implants, not only without rejection, but even with enthusiasm. Further research has allowed us to speed up this process, with the future hope of being able to instantly replace missing teeth! Dr. McNerney has been working with dental implant restorations since 1986. Each case is evaluated as far as treatment options, which may involve a team approach to implant placement and restoration. For cases with significant jawbone loss, an experienced surgeon works with Dr. McNerney to restore patients back to health. For routine tooth replacement where bone is still sufficient, Dr. McNerney places the implant as well as providing the final tooth replacement. Implant-restored teeth are truly one of the miracles of our century! If you have been coping with the difficulties of missing teeth, please do not give up hope.
